Manta Ray Night Dives on the Big Island

The manta ray night dive is widely regarded as one of the top scuba diving experiences in the world. Certified divers descend to a sandy bottom at approximately 25-35 feet, position themselves around an array of underwater lights, and watch in awe as giant manta rays — some with wingspans exceeding 14 feet — soar inches overhead, performing graceful barrel rolls as they filter-feed on plankton attracted to the lights.

This experience is unique to the Kona Coast, where a resident population of reef manta rays feeds nearly every night in the waters off Keauhou and the Kona airport. The dive is relatively shallow and calm, making it accessible to newly certified divers, while the spectacle is extraordinary enough to thrill the most experienced.

Dive charters depart in the early evening, reaching the manta viewing sites as darkness falls. After a thorough briefing on manta etiquette — no touching, no chasing, controlled breathing — divers descend and settle on the bottom for an encounter that typically lasts 30-45 minutes. Multiple mantas commonly appear, with some nights seeing 10 or more individuals feeding simultaneously.

All dive equipment is included, and most operators accommodate both divers and snorkelers on the same boat, making it possible for mixed groups to share the experience.
